My Xylitol Hot Tea – Red Sugar Life Yumminess

Tea is one of my favorite drinks. There are many varieties and many ways to prepare it. I enjoy hot tea frequently, it is a regular part of my Red Sugar Life. Being Type 1 diabetic (type 1.5 diabetes) I am mindful about the sugar content of what I consume, especially with having insulin resistance. I enjoy having unsweetened tea sometimes, but most times I like to have some sort of sweetener in it (a sweetener that is not table sugar). As a type 1 diabetic, one of my favorite sweeteners to use in my hot tea is pure xylitol.

Sugar Free AND Delicious!

Since xylitol has zero sugar as well as a zero glycemic index, I can enjoy my hot tea freely without worrying about it raising my blood sugar levels (blood glucose levels), which is important for me as I pick foods to use consistently in my Red Sugar Life.  I wrote about xylitol and its benefits here.

How I Make My Xylitol Hot Tea

The xylitol that I use has the consistency and appearance similar to conventional table sugar, but it is not table sugar. It dissolves beautifully in liquid. I have found that it dissolves with ease in hot tea, and with cooler drinks it will require more vigorous stirring but it eventually dissolves. In this recipe I use xylitol from Health Garden. It’s pure birch xylitol, no additives, fillers, no odd aftertaste, just pure sweet goodness:

Ingredients To Make Xylitol Hot Tea

Making the tea is very simple and easy, only 3 ingredients needed! Ingredients listed below:

  • 16 ounces of water.
  • 1 or 2 tea bags, depending on desired strength.
  • 1 tablespoon of pure xylitol, more or less to taste.
  • 1 mug that can hold at least 16 ounces of water.

Directions For Preparation

In this recipe I use simple black tea or green tea.

  • Prepare hot tea according to personal preference and allow it to brew to reach desired strength. Once desired strength is reached, remove tea bags from mug.

  • Measure out 1 tablespoon of xylitol and stir into hot xylitol tea. Stir tea until xylitol is completely dissolved.
  • Optional: Sometimes I add a few drops of pure stevia, another amazing sweetener I use frequently.
  • Allow tea to cool to desired temperature, if needed.

And that is it, done! Now it is time to enjoy the yumminess. Spoon optional, I like to sip slowly. If I am not enjoying it in a ceramic or glass mug, I may drink it from a thermal mug that traps heat inside, keeping my tea warmer for much longer.

Some Variations To Try

There are many different ways to have xylitol tea, here I list some variations:

  • Making green tea instead of black tea
  • Using decaffeinated tea (black or green)
  • Using some pure stevia drops as additional sweetener
  • Adding in some raw honey as additional sweetener
  • Adding in chia seeds, one of my favorite things to do!

A Mainstay Of Mine

Xylitol tea is here to stay for me. I have it year-round, doesn’t matter if the weather is warm or cold, I enjoy it anytime in my Red Sugar Life!
